In this newest volume in the Westminster Bible Companion, Paul Hooker suggests that 1 and 2 Chronicles is not a "history of Israel," but rather a theological reflection on the story of Israel's faith. The Chronicler uses the narratives of Samuel and Kings, skillfully edited and augmented, to develop his vision of Israel. At the center of that vision lies the assertion that Israel is the people of God, selected by God from among all the nations, and set apart to worship God in the place of God's choosing (Jerusalem) and in the manner of God's intent (according to the instructions of the Torah). The Chronicler grounds that worship in actions of Israel's heroic kings, David and Solomon; he also traces its impact on Israel's life as a nation. However, his ultimate purpose is not to dwell on long ago. Rather, he seeks to sketch the lines of Israel's future as the people of God by drawing on the resources of Israel's past.

Paul K. Hooker is a Presbyterian minister, and is currently Executive Presbyter, Presbytery of St. Augustine, Jacksonville, Florida.
