$15.95 $13.95 On Sale!

With prophetic power and conviction, Daniel Berrigan shows how the message of the prophet Isaiah can speak directly to us who live at the end of a turbulent period of human history. His book is an exercise in pastoral prophecy for all who seek to apply biblical teachings to contemporary life.

About the Author: Daniel Berrigan is a Jesuit priest who has been deeply involved, both nationally and internationally, in the peace movement. His antiwar activism beginning with protests against the Vietnam War has resulted in numerous imprisonments, most recently in 1995. He is the author of many books; among his latest is Isaiah: Spirit of Courage, Gift of Tears (Fortress Press).

"Isaiah lived in a time astonishingly like ours--with war and rumors of war. In the great prophetic tradition, he intervened directly in political, military, and diplomatic events. He predicted the invasion of his country; it happened twice. He lived to see his beloved Jerusalem besieged. It was a time like ours, a time of whetted swords and rusted plowshares, of immense violence and social conflict and neglect of the poor. Then this oracle came to him: Swords into plowshares! What does Isaiah have to say to us?" --from the Introduction

"Biblical scholars muse on Second Isaiah and Third Isaiah. Now is the time to learn about a Fourth Isaiah and an existing community in a time of whetted swords and rusted plowshares. Berrigan's book, written in a splendid immediacy of style and spirit, bridges the gap between the then and the now." — Dorothee Soelle, author of Theology for Skeptics

"Isaiah is a gifted poet's compelling invitation to rethink the nature of prophetic witness, then and now." — Richard John Neuhaus, Editor in Chief, First Things
