Psalm 48
2 Corinthians 12:2-10
Mark 6:1-13

  1. 2 Samuel 5:1-5, 9-10

In this passage, David becomes king of Israel as God had promised. David was anointed when he was a shepherd boy. David had to wait along time for God to fulfill God’s promise. Ask the children about a time when they had to wait along time for something that was promised to them. Most of them will certainly have a story since we adults are experts at making children wait! Children also want to know when God will answer their prayers. Ask the children if it might have been hard for David to wait to be king. David trusted God all the while he was waiting. The children can remember David when it is hard for them to have patience waiting for God to answer their prayers.

  1. Mark 6:1-13

This passage is two stories. In verses 1-6, Jesus is teaching in his hometown. Instead of the people believing what he was teaching, they rejected Jesus and everything he said. In verses 7 - 13 Jesus sends out the twelve disciples to preach, cast out demons, and to heal.

The disciples had spent time learning from Jesus and praying with Jesus before they were sent out. The disciples had learned how to trust Jesus. Ask the children who teaches them about Jesus. They might name a Sunday school teacher, pastor, parent or family member.

The disciples are now ready to go out and tell people about Jesus. Ask the children what they would take on a trip. Ask them where they would stay, where they would eat and how they would pay for the trip. They will probably respond that a parent pays for everything they need, or they do not have to pay anything because they stay with a grandparent. Show the children a heavy suitcase and a staff or walking stick. Ask them which they would rather take with them on a trip. They had spent time learning from Jesus and praying with Jesus before they were sent out. The disciples had to learn how to trust Jesus. The disciples did not need anything high tech like a computer or expensive like fancy posters to tell people about Jesus. They just needed to be themselves, to trust and obey God. Children can understand that they can be God’s messengers too, just as they are, without a lot of things but with a lot of love to share.
