Christmas Skit: To the Least of These

Christmas Clown Skit:  To the Least of These

By Jan Gee

Two hobo clowns:  Clown One/Dale; Clown Two/Ryan.

Props:  Refrigerator box; two tattered bags; stuffed dog on tattered rope; two food cans (sardine style with large candy fish and spam); two plastic forks; tattered sock; tattered Christmas stocking; piece of yarn; broken evergreen branch, can and rocks; broken star, crude paper chain; tattered blanket.

Stage set-up:  Refrigerator box lying open at the front of the room so people can see in it.  As quiet music plays, Clown One slowly enters the room, carrying a tattered bag and a stuffed dog on a leash of tattered rope.

Clown One goes to the box, sets down the bag, lovingly pets the dog, then ties the leash to the box.  Then the clown reaches into the box and pulls out a small sardine can with one last morsel.  As the clown is about to eat it, he notices the dog.  The clown starts to eat the morsel several times, but finally lovingly gives it to the dog.

Next, Clown One pulls a tattered sock from the bag and hangs it on the box entrance.  He also pulls out a broken evergreen branch and places in a can with rocks, drapes crude paper chain across front of the box.  He then reaches into his bag and brings out the broken star.  He lovingly shines it with his elbow and places it a top the branch and looks to heaven.  He unties the dog, picks him up and proudly show-off the decorations.

Finally, the Clown One pulls out a small, tattered blanket from his bag and crawls into the box, covers himself with the blanket, cuddles the dog and falls asleep.

Then Clown Two enters, also carrying a worn bag.  He pauses and looks in the box, pets the dog and then picks up the empty sardine can.  He opens his bag and takes out a can of food and ties a bow around it with yarn.  He places it under the tree branch.  Clown Two also reaches in his bag and finds a tattered Christmas stocking and hangs it in place of the sock.  He looks into his bag for more, turns it over to show it is empty and then walks a few steps away and curls up to sleep, shivering cold.

Clown One awakes with a start and peeks out the box to see Clown Two shivering.  Clown One crawls out of the box with the dog in arm and notices the can of food under the tree and the Christmas stocking.  With slow, thoughtful looks Clown One looks at the gifts and the shivering Clown Two.  He walks over and places the blanket onto Clown Two who is awakened.  Clown One invites Clown Two to his place.  The two sit together, Clown Two wraps the blanket around Clown One, Clown One pulls out two plastic forks, cleans one on arm and hands it to Clown Two and reaches for the can of food.  Clown One places the dog between them and Clown Two pets the dog.

Freeze into place for the transition into Christ’s Birthday Party.
