June 18 Trinity Sunday

Isaiah 6:1-8
Psalm 29
Romans 8:12-17
John 3:1-17

  1. John 3:1-6

The entire passage listed in the lectionary for the gospel of John is too lengthy for young children to comprehend. Focus on Nicodemus and his question in verse four and Jesus’ reply in verse five. We are born of "water and Spirit" through baptism. If there is a baptism this Sunday, invite the children to come to the front so they can see and hear. Pour a generous amount of water into the baptismal font or ask a child to pour the water. Talk with the children about how they can help the person, whether young or old, being baptized to know about God’s love. Ask the children what they would like to tell the person about the church family. Children take their care responsibilities of others seriously when we talk with them about specific ways they can help.

Older children will be able to make the connection between Nicodemus being a Pharisee in a position of leadership. Talk with them about what risks Nicodemus took to come speak to Jesus. Why did Nicodemus come at night? You can talk with them about their own questions they have, although this would be better in a secure setting with a trusted adult and not at a children’s message. Talk with the children about places in the world where it is dangerous to be a Christian. (top of page)
