Prayers for Worship
by David von Schlichten

Call to Worship

Leader: God the Trinity teaches us that, whoever wants to be first,
People: must be last.
Leader: When we welcome the helpless in Christ’s name,
People: we welcome God.

Ima, your Son made himself last so that we could be first. Reteach us the wisdom that begets gentleness, humility, service. In the name of Christ we pray. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

How often we trespass against you, Adonai. We are green with envy, bitterness, selfishness. We want to be Number One, want to convince everyone (especially ourselves) that we are the greatest. Help us to submit ourselves to you and to resist the Devil. In the name of the one who suffered, forgive us. Please.

Words of Assurance

Alleluia, Christ is risen, so you are, too. God forgives all your sins. The LORD sustains your life. Yes!

Prayer of Inspiration

Wisdom-Spirit, through the sermon, humble us to be last according to the Word.

Prayers of the People

Mother of Jeremiah, the Church is extraordinary. Astounding! We praise you for translators such as Saint Jerome. Increase our wisdom. Adonai, (congregational response: defend our cause according to your will.).

Creation, including seven billion humans, is magnificent. The leaves changing; we love that! Sovereign, bless the people of the United States and all of us creatures. Expand our minds so that we use our brains for helping those in need. Adonai, . . .

Source, we praise your for Saint Michael and all angels. Angels are mysterious and fascinating, frightening and comforting. Bless the angels, and guide our relationship with them. Lead us away from the temptation to focus on angels to the exclusion of you. Adonai, . . .

We exalt you for healing us. Wrap your arms around all in need, including everyone we mention now [Add names.]. Embolden us to assist with the healing. Adonai, . . .

(You may add other praises and petitions here...)

We pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Offertory Prayer

We offer you a freewill sacrifice and praise your name, O LORD, for it is good.

Leader: God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, has welcomed us
People: and sends us out the welcome others. Yes.
