Power and Might

He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.

Isaiah 40: 29-31 (NRSV)

Power and Might

(a hymn by Peter Holden

based on Isaiah 40: 21-31)

to be sung to Maccabæus  (À toi la gloire)

adapted from George Frederick Handel (1685-1749)

Power and might, God gives to the meek

even youth get weary and the old grow weak;

but there is a promise: if on God we call

we receive God’s power, which is hope for all.

Give thanks to God; give thanks to the Son!

When we claim that promise, life will have begun!

Rising like eagles, gliding in the sky,

energy abounding, we can almost fly,

run and not be tired, walking without fear:

these are gifts which God gives, to us now and here.

Give thanks to God; give thanks to the Son!

When we claim that promise, life will have begun!

So spoke the prophet, centuries ago,

and so spoke Lord Jesus, whom in faith we know.

Offering life to all folk, old and weak and young;

let us claim that promise, life has just begun!

Give thanks to God; give thanks to the Son!

When we claim that promise, life will have begun!
