Prayers for Worship
by David von Schlichten

Call to Worship

Leader: The Father stills the storm and silences the waves of the sea.
People: God is ever our protective parent who has saved us for eternity.
Leader: In the name of the Trinity we worship,
People: for now is the acceptable time!

Prayer of Invocation

Holy Spirit, many forces toss us about. Strengthen our faith to trust in God's saving power during a crisis. Fill us with Christ-peace. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

God of Exorcism, we know you will save us from perishing. Even though our faith is weak; even though we often take easy routes instead of enduring hard roads for you; even though we criticize and challenge you, thinking we know better than you do how to be God; even though we do not always love our family members as we should, you still love us.

Forgive us by Christ's power. Rebuke the wind, and say to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” Amen.

Words of Assurance

The wind and sea obey Christ. Through his sacrifice, Jesus rescues us from drowning in sin and death. We are safe in the boat. Now is the day of salvation.

Prayer of Inspiration

Holy Wind, fill us with the Word according to the love of the Father.

Prayers of the People

Abba, you have shown us love through the Church, including through leaders such as John the Baptist and bishops such as Cyril of Alexandria and Irenaeus of Lyons. Help us to love others as you have loved us. God of the Calmed Sea, (congregational response: we exalt you.).

We are grateful for loving fathers and other father figures. Lead us to thank them for all they have done for us. Bless them so that they can serve you better. God of the Calmed Sea, . . .

Pappa El, we praise you for the United States and all nations, including President Obama and every leader. Unite us against poverty, injustice, war and other forms of violence. Bring comfort to fathers and father-figures who cannot be with loved ones today. God of the Calmed Sea, . . .

Daddy God, you are tender yet strong in caring for us. Heal those with special needs we mention now in our hearts or out loud. [Add names.] God of the Calmed Sea, . . .

(You may add other praises or petitions here....)

We have given you these prayers with faith in your loving, healing power and eternal wisdom.

In the name of Christ we praise. Amen.

Offertory Prayer

With these gifts to you, our Father, we exalt you in the assembly of the people. Hallelujah!

Benediction

Leader: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, the Trinity, watches over us.
People: Even in the fiercest hurricane we have God's strong love. So we go out with courage.
