Prayers for Worship
by David von Schlichten

Call to Worship

Leader: Sing to God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, for the death, resurrection, and ascension of Christ.
People: Alleluia! The LORD has done marvelous things.
Leader: The Almighty teaches, protects, and encourages us.
People: Praise to our Heavenly Mother. Alleluia!

Invocation

God, you have given birth to, raised, saved, and sanctified us all. Teach us to abide in you and to bear fruit of love for one another. In the name of the Ascended One we praise by the Spirit’s power. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

Creator of all, we praise you for sending the Son to save us from our sins, which are numerous. We often become legalistic and rigid about rules and procedures instead of following your lead. We are also lax about keeping the commandments. You call us friends, but we act more like your casual acquaintances or even strangers, even enemies. We are careless with creation.

For the sake of the Risen and Ascended One, forgive us. Amen.

Words of Assurance

Sing to the LORD a new song. God has done marvelous things! Through the death and resurrection of the Messiah, the Almighty forgives us all our sins. By the power of Jesus, we conquer the world with love. Alleluia!

Prayer of Inspiration

Paraclete, through the sermon, lead us to larger love for one another.

Prayers of the People

We are ever grateful for Mother Church, including St. Matthias and every leader. With all the earth (congregational response: we shout for joy to the LORD.)

We are in awe of the Ascension, and we meditate upon it so that its beautiful profundity may expand our wisdom. With all the earth . . .

We thank you for your astounding creation, including the United States. Humble each of us to work together to end poverty, war, injustice, disease, and abuse of the natural environment. With all the earth ...

Mother of the universe, we exalt you for mothers of every sort. Mother figures do much but receive little gratitude. Tutor our hearts to show greater respect and tenderness toward mother figures. Help us to be more like them. With all the earth . . .

We praise you for healing us. Touch everyone in need of care now [Add names], and open our eyes to new ways that we can assist with the healing. With all the earth . . .

(You may add other praises and petitions here...)

We give these prayers over to you, confident that you will respond with abiding love by the power of Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.

Offertory Prayer

From your creation, we give back to you for your glory.

Benediction

Leader: God of the Vine,
People: you enable us to abide in you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Leader: Be our Mother-Leader throughout the week.
People: Show us how to love one another. Yes.
