Is Your Soul Phone Ringing?
by Tom Cox

Cellular or Mobile phones are here to stay. On this World Communications Sunday, it's frightening to think how much technology we have absorbed. A thought that can strike you, when your offspring ask questions like the following. "Dad/Mum, is it true that when you were young (i.e. long, long ago) you actually had to know where someone was before you phoned them?" Or: "Did you really have to get up and walk to the television to change channels?"

One teacher, fed up with the interrupting chirp of phones during class, challenged his students to record their actual phone conversations for a week. By his reckoning, the returns showed that most of the lengthy communications were totally unnecessary. When you look at the recorded words of Jesus, it's amazing in comparison how short his instructions often are- "Come" "Go" Eat" "Be healed" . Today he's telling us that we have a mission, a purpose in life. To be the best at what you do. In ministry, in retirement, in marriage; to be a good salesperson even, or a good listener, or a good homemaker. This call may ask you to let go of a grudge, to offer a helping hand, a comforting word, to give way in traffic. Will you answer this call?

"May he enlighten the eyes of your mind so that you can see what hope his call holds for you…" [second reading]
