The voice of truth
by Tom Cox

The Russian Orthodox Synod concluded their September 2000 meeting in St. Petersburg, with the motion that a monarchy was the ideal form of ruling society. Most commentators concluded that this was a pretty anachronistic viewpoint. Kings and kingship for the most part conjure up too many bad memories and experiences.

At the time of Jesus’ earthly life, the king was of utmost importance – even time itself was calculated on the basis of when a monarch began their reign. In this year of our Lord, two thousand the question is; what does it mean for us to name Christ as King?

An apt query, particularly when respect wanes for those who rule over us in the political realm and monarchy is reduced to symbolism. When we regard no one as better or more important than us. Is anyone really worthy of our unquestioning obedience and unflagging dedication?

Only, if like Christ, they serve in (that rare quality) truth. Doing the truth in love means getting rid of self-interest and selfishness. It’s a world away from those who are shabbily “economical with the truth.” Truth is more than something in the mind or mouth, for the follower of Him who is the Truth; it must reside in mind, heart and hand. It does not take royal blood to be a kingdom builder, just a truthful heart
